The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission is to step into the chair of the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI) from today.
ENNHRI represents 44 national human rights bodies across Council of Europe Member States.
IHREC chief commissioner Emily Logan takes office today after being elected in Athens last October.
The incoming board is made up of five other national institutions from Norway, Greece, Poland, Albania and Croatia. Logan replaces Croatian Ombudswoman Lora Vidović.
She said: “It is a privilege to take on the chair of ENNHRI at a time of great challenge for human rights in Europe, where previously-held norms and standards are being undermined and challenged.”
