Ken Murphy calls for Government to act on 'chaotic' legislation
Law Society director general Ken Murphy appeared on last Sunday’s RTÉRadio One weekly current affairs round-up This Week. The subject matter was the new Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2017, which came into effect last week.
The controversial bill, which was opposed by many rural TDs, was steered through the Dáil by Transport Minister Shane Ross.
Speaking on the RTÉRadio programme, Mr Murphy said the “solicitors who apply the law” are dealing with a “needlessly complex and chaotic area of law.”
This results, he said, in the public getting angry when they see cases “being dismissed because of technicalities.
“We would like to see the Government prioritise a Road Transport Act which would allow for the prosecution of road traffic crimes such as drunk-driving, fairly and effectively,” he said.
