Aim and Objectives

This conference, presented by the Technology Committee in collaboration with Law Society Professional Training, is aimed at all practicing solicitors. The distinguished panel of speakers will discuss current issues and developments in technology and the implications for the legal practice.

Speakers 

Aidan McCullen, The Innovation Show.
Aidan is the host and founder of the Innovation Show, broadcast globally and on national radio stations in Ireland and Finland. He is author of the bestselling book "Undisruptable: A Mindset of Permanent Reinvention for Individuals, Organisations and Life" which includes a Foreword by Visa founder Dee Hock. Aidan’s presentation is visual, story rich and full of interesting analogies to bring concepts to life. Aidan is a Change Consultant, Board Director and Executive Coach. He works with organisational teams to improve how they engage and innovate. He is a champion for change and has reinvented in his own career after rugby. Aidan worked in transformation for digital, innovation and now culture and leadership. Aidan has played for Europe’s most successful teams: Leinster and Toulouse and has represented Ireland. He developed the digital eco-system for Communicorp Media Group, served as Head of Innovation for Ireland's National broadcaster and worked as an innovation consultant for Global company Katawave. Today he sits on the board of National Broadband Ireland, rolling out connectivity to the remotest parts of Ireland. He developed and delivers a module on Emerging Technology Trends in Trinity College Business School, ranked 1st in Ireland and in the top 100 globally.

Brian Horkan, Partner, Mason Hayes Curran, Dublin 
Brian is Head of our Public Health and Prosecutions team a partner in Mason Hayes Curran Dispute Resolution team. Brian has extensive experience advising clients in complex constitutional and administrative law matters. He is an expert in health care law with specialities in wardship, child protection, mental health, and adoption. Brian has advised on appearances and interaction with Tribunal of Inquiry and Commissions of Investigation. He has also advised on consent to treatment, confidentiality, freedom of information and data protection. He leads the regulatory criminal team advising and acting in prosecutions and advising regulators in developing prosecution procedures and policies. Brian also has a keen interest in innovation in legal services. He is a Chair of the Law Society’s Technology Committee engaging and supporting lawyers to use technology in practice.

Jeanne Kelly, Senior Partner, LK Shields, Dublin
Jeanne is a senior partner in LK Shields Intellectual Property, Technology and Privacy team. Jeanne has had a market-leading commercial and technology law practice for 20 years. She has led data protection compliance programmes for some of Ireland’s leading corporates as well as for multinationals with Irish operations. Jeanne is a regular speaker at conferences in Ireland and abroad on GDPR, legal issues for start-up and scaling companies and data privacy generally. Previous speaking engagements include IBA, ABA, UCD, TCD and Law Society of Ireland (including teaching on its MOOC on Data Protection Law). Jeanne is Chair of the Technology Law grouping of the British Irish Chamber of Commerce, in which she has been actively involved since its foundation.  She is an active member of the Law Society’s Technology Committee.  In 2020 she was awarded a Corporate Leader of the Year award at the Irish Women’s award, the first lawyer to win such an award.

Kate McKenna, Frontline Ventures Management Company Limited, Dublin  
Kate is a member of the Irish branch of the Society for Computers and Law and enjoys organising Irish based events for the society when she can. She also lectures on the Irish Law Society’s Diploma in Technology and IP Law course and sits on the Law Society’s Technology Committee.  Kate joins Frontline as its first in-house legal counsel.  She is a qualified Irish lawyer, trademark agent and all-round intellectual property nerd. She trained and qualified in one of Dublin’s top five law firms – where she picked up her grá for technology law – and has spent the last eight years as an in-house lawyer for a multinational gaming company.  In the spare time that two small children allow she loves to get together with her beloved string quartet and bash away on her cello for a few hours in between cups of tea, biscuits and chats!  She holds a LLM from TCD and so the Frontline office in Lombard Street is a return to her old stomping ground – or at least it will be when lockdown is over.
