PIAB updates

The Personal Injuries Assessment Board (PIAB) has issued two updates to the profession regarding COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

Service mainenance and the PIAB Solicitors' Portal

In view of the escalating public health situation it may prove difficult to correspond with PIAB in relation to your client’s claim. It is anticipated that normal postal services may be compromised in due course.

It is highly recommended that members sign up to use the PIAB Solicitors' Portal with a view to minimising disruption to services. This will mean PIAB is in a better position to inform members as to claim status. In addition, members can upload correspondence to the portal.

Many legal practices are now registered to use the PIAB Solicitors' Portal.  Benefits of the Solicitors' Portal include:  Automated acknowledgement of the Statute stopped date on submission of an application; access to real time information in relation to claims;  ability to correspond with PIAB through the Portal; the facility to monitor the progress of claim applications; ready access to information to convey to clients;  and payment on account options. In addition, if a claim is submitted through the Solicitors' Portal the application fee is €45. If solicitors post new claim applications to the PIAB the cost is €90.

For general information in relation to the portal please contact PIAB at solicitorportal@piab.ie.

Cancellation of independent medical examinations due to COVID-19

Due to the on-going constraints caused by Coronavirus COVID-19, PIAB have cancelled all independent medical examinations arranged from 16 March up to and including 30 April 2020.

These medical examinations are organised as part of the assessment of personal injuries claims, and normally take place in doctors’ clinics or hospitals.

PIAB will keep the position under review and the medical examinations will be rescheduled as soon as possible.

Please see www.piab.ie for future updates.
