News

  • The latest Gazette includes an in-depth interview with transglobal aviation leasing lawyer Donal Hanley. Donal talks to Mary Hallissey about a career that has spanned every continent with world-leading companies. Read the article
  • Voting is currently taking place for the 2021 Council Election. Ballot papers have been despatched to members on 15 October, with voting set to close on Thursday 28 October 2021 at 5pm. View candidates and election literature
  • The European Company Lawyers Association (ECLA) is hosting two general counsel round tables in November in Zurich and Rome. The ESG Roundtable in Zurich on 11-12 November will discuss legal challenges and implications arising from ESG targets in European companies. An Antitrust /Competition Law Roundtable in Rome on 18-19 November will discuss current developments and trends on antitrust and competition law on a pan-European level.
  • An article in the latest Gazette examines key elements in the arbitration process, and recent developments. Gavin Woods and Seán McCarthy argue that arbitration should be seriously considered as the primary dispute resolution process by any in-house counsel or solicitor for contracts with an international dimension.   • The ECLA is conducting a study, Legal Departments on the Move, with Wolters Kluwer to measure the impact of the pandemic and other factors on in-house legal departments. The first stage of this research is a short survey. In-house solicitors in the private and public sectors are invited to take part. Complete the survey

Resources

  • On 31 January 2020, the UK formally became a third country for the purposes of EU data protection law. A guidance note from the Intellectual Property & Data Protection Law Committee details the current position whereby data can now flow freely from the European Union to the United Kingdom where it benefits from an essentially equivalent level of protection to that guaranteed under EU law.   • The 2020/21 Annual Report of the Law Society has been published. The report includes key information for members on the Society's performance in the past year, financial details, and statistics about the profession. View the Annual Report microsite

Training

  • A useful online course from Law Society Finuas Skillnet examines the legal issues surrounding the return of employees to workplaces. Topics covered include data protection issues arising from working from home, a practical guide to managing the workforce and the challenges arising from employees’ return to the workplace, and how to provide a safe working environment for employees.   • The Diploma Centre’s popular Certificate in Trade Mark Law returns in November 2021. This programme gives participants an insight into the law and practice of trade marks, providing a practical approach to trade mark law that equips participants with the necessary skills to deal with issues that arise in practice.
