News

A number of recent news items relevant for in-house solicitors are listed below.

  • The Registration of Business Names Act 1963 is now under review by the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation, which is seeking submissions from interested parties. See the story on Gazette.ie
  • The European Company Lawyers Association (ECLA) has welcomed French plans to afford company lawyers a status similar to that of external legal counsel, in particular with respect to the confidentiality of legal advice they provide. If implemented, ECLA President Jonathan Marsh noted, the measures would be a "real revolution" and a step towards broader recognition of legal privilege for company lawyers.   • New state supports aim to help business to prepare for a no-deal Brexit, including complimentary and financially supported training. Currently, three voucher schemes represent opportunities for companies to access training in customs and other issues. See details under Brexit no-deal planning
  • The Registrar of Companies has been appointed as the Registrar of Beneficial Ownership (RBO) of Companies and Industrial and Provident Societies with effect from 29 July. Accordingly, the RBO is now open to accept filings. Find out more on Gazette.ie

  • In-House practitioners who wish to become training solicitors have a new resource to recruit trainees. The Traineeship Section maintains a register of firms who are open to offering a training contract. Register for free
  • A range of new precedents are available from the Law Society Library. Several of the new documents are of great relevance to in-house practice, including an agreement for link between websites, assignment and licence back of intellectual property rights, and construction project documentation. Training

The Diploma Centre and Law Society Professional Training offer training for in-house solicitors in the private and public sectors.

  • Booking is now open for the Annual In-House & Public Sector Conference on 11 October 2019. This event, presented by the In-house and Public Sector Committee in collaboration with Law Society Finuas Skillnet, will focus on the influence of technology on in-house solicitors.   • The Diploma Centre's Certificate Company Secretarial Law & Practice will return in February 2020. Jointly awarded by the Law Society of Ireland and the Institute of Chartered Secretaries & Administrators, this certificate offers a practical insight into company secretarial requirements in Ireland.
