The Law Society of Ireland actively supports Public Legal Education (PLE) projects through a series of initiatives and engagement with solicitor, trainees and the public.
PLE aims to increase awareness of the law by teaching people about our legal system and how law impacts on society, so they can better exercise their legal rights and responsibilities. This certificate is a programme which aims to develop the skills of solicitors to run an effective public legal education programme in their community, based on the pedagogical approach and learner centred methodologies of Street Law. The steps involved for interested solicitors are;
- Begin to develop your idea around a public legal education (PLE) programme.
- Apply for a place at our PLE Orientation training in September / October 2023.
- Implement and evaluate your chosen programme & fulfil the course requirements.
About the Certificate course
This is an annual course and initial training takes place at the Street Law Orientation weekend in September. It runs for approximately 6 months. Upon successful completion of the programme, participants will be awarded a Certificate in Public Legal Education and will also be recognised as a Law Society of Ireland approved Street Law trainer.

The assessment of this award is competency based and dependent upon successful completion of a number of elements including:
- attendance at the initial orientation training,
- completion of a project proposal,
- implementation of a public legal education programme, and
- presenting an evaluation report on your programme.
