A tablet computer in the Law Society Library

The library set up this new service for practising solicitors to answer frequently asked questions on specific areas of law:

Each topic featured consolidates information on:

  • Applicable legislation, leading cases, relevant book extracts and journal articles by leading experts in the relevant field of law
  • Recent precedents and practice notes (where applicable)
  • Links to useful external organisations

Whether you want to get up to speed on a topic outside your area of expertise or save time looking for useful resources on another subject, this new service supports you in your day-to-day practice.

Relevant book extracts accessible via our eBook platforms will be indicated for each topic, where appropriate. The library now provides access for members to the Thomson Reuters ProView platform, which includes titles from Round Hall's Irish law texts series.

The library also provides free access for members to copies of unreported judgments from the superior courts. Links are provided to any sources publicly available.

This new service is launching with three initial topics, covering assisted decision-making, rights of residence and enduring powers of attorney. We are planning to add one topic per month, with each new topic circulated via our fortnightly newsletter, LawWatch. Topics are based on commonly asked queries from our solicitor members. We also welcome your suggestions on topics you would like added in the future.

This resource can be used in conjunction with the library's recently published subject guide on Legal Research and Writing Skills which delves into legal research resources in more detail.

The ‘Trending Legal Queries’ database complements the library's existing suite of 12 subject guides covering broader topics such as conveyancing, probate, criminal law, employment law, artificial intelligence and environmental and planning law.
