Snapshot of the profession
A new Law Society report describes the Irish solicitors' profession in 2025 as larger, more diverse, and more geographically uneven than at any point in its recent history. There were 12,961 practising solicitors registered with the Law Society at year end, a 100% increase on the number of practitioners since 2000. Of these, 27% now work in-house.

Vetting legislation
Mr Justice Barr has held that certain provisions of the vetting legislation are unconstitutional. It now appears that the mechanism underlying this process may have been achieved at the expense of the fundamental rights of those working at the coalface. Tech Talks: In-House Legal
This new interactive Law Society audio series on the Platforum9 app continues with Áine Lyons, Senior Vice President & Deputy General Counsel, Workday, on 23 June at 12 noon. Designed specifically for busy in-house lawyers on emerging developments in AI and digital transformation, you can join sessions live and engage directly with speakers and peers.
Other upcoming speakers include Bjarne Philip Tellmann, CEO of FjordStream Advisors GmbH, discussing Law in an era of AI at 4pm on 3 July.
October conference on navigating regulation
The Inhouse and Public Sector Committee Annual Conference will take place in the Law Society on 7 October (9.30am to 1.15pm). The theme of the conference is Navigating Regulation in Ireland: Balancing Competition, Innovation and Compliance, with a particular focus on technology, AI and communications. Speakers include senior leaders from Coimisiún na Meán, the Data Protection Commission and ComReg.
Attendance earns 3.5 hours CPD (professional development and solicitor wellbeing and general, by group study).

The Law Society is offering a micro-credential course in Strategic In-House Practice starting on 14 October. Micro-credentials are bite-sized, flexible and accredited courses.
Law Society Professional Training are constantly updating the courses on offer across a variety of legal topics and skills-based training.
This year’s free Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) has started but is still available to access. Gain insights from lawyers and other expert speakers on areas of social media, AI and the law.
