Chairperson of the Board of Oberstown

The Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth invites applications from candidates to serve as chairperson to the Board of Management of the Oberstown Children Detention Campus.

Essential requirements

Candidates must demonstrate evidence of experience at an appropriately senior level of the following:

  • Proven knowledge and understanding of the rights and interests of children including a demonstrated commitment to the full implementation of the rights and interests of children in conflict with the law;

  • Demonstrable knowledge/experience of the youth justice and/or children sectors and appreciation of the strategic and political context in which Oberstown Children Detention Campus operates;

  • Significant strategic leadership experience with a proven track record of organizational management and continuous improvement in a highly complex and fast paced organization;

  • Significant board level experience in the public, private or voluntary sector, with the confidence, skill and resilience to lead the Board;

  • Experience in performance management and the interpretation and analysis of performance information, a capacity to quickly develop an understanding of the budgets required to achieve the organisation’s mission;

  • An understanding of the complexity of providing evidence-based, high quality, secure services to a vulnerable population on a 24/7 basis, including risk management;

  • Ability to ensure that the Board guides, challenges and supports the Director and the Senior Management Team to deliver on the strategic vision of the Campus as set out in the Oberstown Strategy 2022-2026;

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to develop and foster constructive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.

While previous experience in the youth justice sector is not a prerequisite, the candidate should be able to demonstrate successful leadership experience and success in an organization or sector of an equivalent scope and scale as Oberstown.
