The Law Society of Ireland has this afternoon (Thursday 23 June 2016) announced the winners of its annual Justice Media Awards.
At the awards ceremony, the President of the Law Society Simon Murphy, made the following comments:
“It is my great pleasure as President of the Law Society of Ireland this year, to welcome you all here to Blackhall Place for the Law Society’s 2016 Justice Media Awards.
"We believe it is vitally important to recognise, reward and encourage excellence in legal journalism. The media is crucial in trying to increase the public’s understanding of law and the legal system. We must therefore strive for the highest standards possible. The investment of time, energy and resources in producing articles, programmes, investigations and research that help to inform and educate Irish citizens on justice and law is a very valuable investment.
"These awards were born in 1992. This year, the 25th awards, was suitably marked with the highest ever number of entrants, so I would like to extend a very warm thank you to everyone who took the time to submit their work for the consideration of our adjudication panel.
"It has also been very busy in the Law Society over the past year. I’ll mention just some of the key events.
"The Society has been working on behalf of consumers left in limbo as a result of the collapse of Setanta Insurance, with a crucial judgement in favour of consumers coming from the High Court last September, which was upheld by the Court of Appeal in March of this year. That battle continues.
"The Law Society’s Law School has received recognition from global giant Apple for its progressive use of technology in teaching and learning. The “Apple Distinguished Program 2015-2017” accreditation is awarded to outstanding schools and programmes worldwide that are centres of innovation, leadership and educational excellence. We are very proud of this accreditation, the first of its kind in Europe, and even more proud of the way we are equipping the solicitors of the future with all the skills to meet their clients’ needs.
"Continuing on that theme, this year we have introduced to the Justice Media Awards two new categories, to incorporate standalone digital and online works. A huge proportion of the public now receives its news and information through digital platforms.
"The Justice Media Awards set extremely high standards. I would like to congratulate all of our winners today and I wish them continued success in their journalistic endeavours.”
