Why Irish Law? The business case is clear from Ireland for Law
‘The business case is clear - as one of the most open economies in the world, and as the only English-speaking Common Law jurisdiction in the EU – Irish laws and legal professionals are perfectly placed to support international business.’ That’s according to Minister Jim O’Callaghan who today launched a new Ireland for Law initiative at a special event at the Law Society of Ireland.
The new fact sheet, ‘Governing Law and Jurisdiction - Why Ireland?’, has been developed for General Counsel of both Irish companies and international firms with a presence in Ireland, and solicitors and barristers practicing in Ireland to provide a clear case about the Irish legal system and the advantages of choosing to do business in Ireland.
Speaking at the launch, Mark Garrett, Director General of Law Society of Ireland, said: “Ireland’s robust legal system and commitment to modernisation make it a very attractive option for both domestic and international contracts. The choice of legal jurisdiction is a key decision that in-house lawyers have a significant influence over, and choosing the right one is vital to the best interests of the business. Irish law offers legal certainty, efficiency and expertise, as well as a competitive cost structure which provides peace of mind for businesses in a time of such global uncertainty.”
Paul McGarry SC said: “The calibre of speakers at today’s event is an indication of the significant expertise that the Irish legal community has to offer for international business. Ireland has a wealth of expertise and experience in dispute resolution across firms and in-house legal teams, world-leading advocates at the Bar with experience in complex litigation and a hugely respected courts system.”
Over 100 members of the Irish legal community who attended the ‘Early-Stage Decision Making: The Case for Choosing Irish Law’ event today heard from General Counsel and in-house legal experts such as:
-
Yvonne Cunnane, Vice President and Head of Data Protection at META Platforms Ireland
-
Nicola Curry, Head of Legal at BNP Paribas Group, Ireland
-
Margaret Maguire, General Counsel at Fexco
Also speaking on a panel at today’s event was Tara Doyle, a partner at Matheson and member of the Ireland for Law Implementation Group which developed the new ‘Governing Law and Jurisdiction - Why Ireland?’ fact sheet.
She said: “Ireland for Law is creating a platform for Irish legal services globally and this fact sheet equips in-house counsel and lawyers with the clear business case they need to inform key decisions. At a time of so much global uncertainty, businesses need to have confidence in the legal system and the legal expertise managing their contracts and Ireland can offer both.”
