Public consultation on competition law in Ireland
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment has invited submissions from interested parties to a public consultation to review certain aspects of competition law in Ireland.
The forthcoming Competition (Amendment) Bill 2021 will transpose Directive (EU) 2019/1 into law.
Under the new law, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) and the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) will get more powers of enforcement to protect consumers and tackle anti-competitive practices.

In addition, the bill includes amendments to existing legislation not covered by the directive, but which seeks to increase the enforcement powers of the CCPC.
Interested parties are invited to make a submission with observations in relation to the questions in the public-consultation document.
The submission process is an opportunity for stakeholders to provide information, experiences and different perspectives on the issues involved in preventing infringements and properly enforcing competition law in Ireland.

The department says that stakeholder submissions are a vital source of information and views, helping inform final drafting of the amendments proposed.
This public consultation is inviting views on these additional amendments only, and the deadline for submissions is 5pm on Friday 29 January.
