Legal Disciplinary Tribunal has been formed
The appointees to the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal have been named. They fall under three categories – ministerial, Law Society and Bar Council nominees.
The High Court President Ms Justice Mary Irvine, making the appointments today (25 November), welcomed the new members to their role and functions, which are assigned under the Legal Services Regulation Act 2015.
Majority
In accordance with section 75 of the act, lay members – who must comprise the majority of the tribunal – are nominated by the Minister for Justice Helen McEntee, and appointed by the President of the High Court.
Not fewer than six nominees each are appointed by both the Law Society and the Bar Council.
The tribunal must comprise at least 40 per cent men, and 40 per cent women.
The disciplinary tribunal is restricted to “not more than 33 members”.
The High Court President has appointed Tom Coughlan to chair the tribunal.
