Immigration permissions are extended again
Minister for Justice Helen McEntee has announced another extension of immigration and international protection permissions, this time to 20 September 2021.
This is the seventh temporary extension, and it applies to permissions that are due to expire between 21 April and 20 September. It is expected to benefit tens of thousands of people.
Minister McEntee said she wanted to reassure people whose immigration permissions were due to expire shortly that their legal status in the country would continue to be maintained.
“It is intended this will be the final temporary extension of immigration permission, however we will continue to keep the situation under review as part of our national response to the pandemic,” she said.
Categories
The measure covers three different categories of people:
- People holding a current valid permission, or a permission that has already been extended under previous announcements,
- People granted permission to land at a port of entry on condition they register at the Registration Office in Burgh Quay or their local garda office within three months, but who have yet to do so,
- Those in the country on a short-stay visa who may be unable to return home due to uncertainties caused by the pandemic.
The Registration Office in Burgh Quay in Dublin remains closed as a result of the COVID-19 restrictions announced by Government in December.
The Department of Justice says customers who were issued with appointments for first-time registrations will be contacted directly by the Immigration Service and prioritised for appointments once the public office can reopen.
