Judge Brian Murray to go to Supreme Court

The Government has agreed to nominate Mr Justice Brian Murray (pictured) for appointment as a judge of the Supreme Court.

A vacancy in the court had arisen after the retirement of Mr Justice Liam McKechnie in April 2021.

The Government has formally advised President Higgins of the nomination, in accordance with constitutional practice.

Judicial appointments are made by the president, acting on the advice of the Government.

Circuit Court assignments

Appointed to the Court of Appeal in 2019, Mr Justice Murray was educated at UCD, the University of Cambridge, and the King’s Inns.

He was called to the Bar in 1989, and appointed senior counsel in 2002.

The Government has also decided to assign Judge Orla Crowe to the Dublin Circuit of the Circuit Court, and to assign Judge Brian O'Callaghan to the Western Circuit of the Circuit Court.

It has also advised the president to appoint solicitor Éiteáin Cunningham as a judge of the District Court. She will be assigned directly to District 1 (Donegal) on appointment.
