UK working group on jury trial resumption

The UK judiciary has set up a working party to examine how soon jury trials may be reinstated.

Lord Chancellor Robert Buckland also said recently that he wanted jury trials back as soon as possible.

The Law Society of England and Wales, Bar Council and Criminal Bar Association have also agreed to join the working party.

Jury trials have been paused since March, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Lord Chancellor also said there can be no judge-only trials but he didn’t rule out smaller jury trials, in straightforward cases.

Remote jury trials have been ruled out and strategy is now focused on resumption of live jury trials.
