Taming the internet – an examinion of the issues

A Law Society seminar next month will examine whether existing regulation of the internet is working properly.

Attendance at the Blackhall Place event carries with it two general CPD points.

It takes place on Thursday 21 November from 4.30-6.30pm and can be booked online.

The Conference is designed by the EU & International Affairs Committee in partnership with Law Society Professional Training.

Efficacy

It will focus on the law currently regulating the internet, its efficacy and proposed developments.

Topics include:

  • Internet advertising and data breaches,
  • Role of privacy and data protection/GDPR rules,
  • On-line safety,
  • Net neutrality,
  • The impact of the EU's Audio-visual Media Services Directive,
  • Is specific regulation required?

The event speakers include Dr Johnny Ryan, chief policy and industrial relations officer, at Brave, the private web browser.

Dr Ryan initiated GDPR actions to reform the $40 billion real time bidding industry, prompting investigation of Google and the IAB (the tracking industry’s standards body) by European data protection authorities.

Testified

He has testified on these matters at the US Senate and at the European Commission.

Speaker Andrew Robinson is a senior manager at the TV regulator the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland. His work is focused on preparation for the implementation of the revised Audio-visual Media Services Directive.

The final speaker is Mark Carpenter, head of corporate affairs at Sky Ireland.

He previously worked in the Fine Gael policy office, as a consultant for the European Commission and as a management consultant with Accenture.
