Search for new GSOC chair begins

The Government is to start the process of appointing a new chair of the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC).

The term of the current chair, Ms Justice Mary Ellen Ring, expires in December.

Expressions of interest will now be sought from serving and retired judges of the superior courts.

New structure

An independent selection panel will then consider the applications, and recommend a person for appointment by the President.

GSOC is preparing to move to a new organisational structure, which was set out in the recently published Policing, Security and Community Safety Bill. The appointment will be for three years, or until the new organisation is established under the bill.

The Minister for Justice Heather Humphreys thanked Justice Ring for her “significant contribution” as chair of GSOC since 2015.
