O'Sullivan is appointed to top United Nations position

Former Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan has landed a prime managerial post at the UN. She has been appointed as deputy to the under-secretary for safety and security, Australian Peter Drennan.

As a former head of a national police force, Ms O’Sullivan is held in high regard by the UN. In her now job, she will be responsible for the management of the department.

The Gardaíhave played an active role in UN police-keeping for many years, along with the Defence Forces. Gardaíhave also acted as advisers for new independent states setting up police forces. The successful role of the Gardaíin these matters would obviously have aided Ms O’Sullivan in her bid to secure her new position.

Politically, her appointment will, in turn, help Ireland’s case for a seat on the UN Security Council.

In a statement, the UN said that Ms O’Sullivan “brings to her role her extensive experience in international safety and security management, strategic management and leadership. She also brings an in-depth knowledge of international security.” The announcement was made by UN secretary general, António Giuterres.

Ms O’Sullivan was cleared recently by the chairman of the Disclosures Committee, Mr Justice Peter Charleton, of all allegations made against her.
