Law Centre NI takes UK-wide award

Law Centre NI has won an award at the Legal Aid Lawyer of the Year Awards (LALYs), which celebrate the work of legal-aid lawyers across the UK.

The centre, which works to ensure access to justice for all in Northern Ireland, took the ‘Regional Legal Aid Firm/Not-for-Profit Agency’ award.

Now in their 19th year, the LALYs are organised by the Legal Aid Practitioners Group (LAPG).

Ambition praised

Praising Law Centre NI, the LALY team highlighted “the scale of its ambition and the calibre of its lawyers”.

There was a special mention for the organisation’s social-security expert Owen McCloskey, who brought a test case successfully challenging the rules on benefits for people with terminal illness.

Ursula O’Hare (Director of Law Centre NI, pictured) described the award as a “wonderful acknowledgement of the arc of the Law Centre’s work over 40 years”.
