CCTV has sound legal footing, DPC confirms

The Data Protection Commission (DPC) has confirmed that there is a sound legal basis for community-based CCTV, and that the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) does not introduce new barriers, Justice minister Charlie Flanagan confirmed to the Dáil yesterday.

Data Protection Commission Helen Dixon (pictured) also recently circulated broad guidance for CCTV data controllers which will be of particular interest to local authorities, the minister said.

On the legal requirements, the minister said that the establishment and maintenance of a CCTV system is a serious matter and it is important that appropriate arrangements and safeguards are in place.
