Law Society essay winner off to Cambridge
The winner of the 2024 Law Society Grainne O’Neill essay competition has been offered a place at Cambridge University.
Waterford pupil Patrick Galvin is to study human, social, and political sciences at the prestigious institution.
In 2024, Patrick received a prize of €1,000 from the Law Society, and an annual trophy (main picture) for his entry.
The Law Society judges described the winning entry as “an excellent essay with superb analysis of the law” and commented that the essay was “a very enjoyable read”.
The Carrigeen native was also recently honoured as Abbey Community College’s 2026 student of the year, the Waterford News and Star reports.
Principal Michelle Jefford praised Patrick’s academic excellence and commitment to learning, which was recognised by the Law Society with his 2024 essay win.
Patrick was also a winner in the Oireachtas essay competition, with an entry on Ireland’s democratic and political system.
Talents
“Those talents were equally evident within Abbey Community College where Patrick made a significant contribution to school life throughout his six years here,” his principal said.
“Patrick enthusiastically participated in a wide range of activities, including athletics, public speaking and sustainability initiatives, demonstrating a commitment to making the most of every aspect of his school experience.”
The support of his proud parents, Leonard and Mairéad Galvin, has been central to his success, Jefford said.
