Law and democracy module for second-level pupils
The Courts Service has launched a fully updated edition of Let's look at the law, its long-running educational module for second-level students.
Designed to help young people understand the law, the courts and their role in a democratic society, the publication has for many years introduced students to key legal and civic concepts through practical classroom activities and discussion.
The new edition builds on that foundation with refreshed content, video resources, updated legal information, and enhanced mock-trial materials designed for today's classrooms.
Topics
The programme has been developed to support teachers and educators in delivering engaging lessons on topics such as:
- People who work in our courts,
- Purpose and sources of law,
- How laws are made in Ireland,
- Irish and European court systems,
- Equality and discrimination,
- Constitutional rights, and
- Operation of a criminal trial.
A key feature of the programme is its focus on active learning.
Students are encouraged to explore legal issues through discussion, problem-solving exercises, case studies, and quizzes.
They can also take part in a mock trial, giving them an opportunity to experience the roles of judges, barristers, witnesses, jurors, and court staff while developing skills in communication, critical thinking, and teamwork.
