The Office of Public Works (OPW) has been carrying out a programme of fire safety and accessibility improvements in Dublin's Four Courts during the summer recess.
A number of accessibility improvements have been completed or are progressing across the Four Courts complex.
Improved access is now available at key entry points.
An automatic gate is now in place at the Chancery Place entrance (Judges' Yard) for wheelchair users who have a security access card.
Upgrades to the main entrance security hut will take place to improve access for all users of the complex.
New automatic wheelchair-access doors at the West Wing entrance are due to be completed this week.
The East Wing (central office) entrance works will be completed outside normal working hours.
Improved access
Court 6 now offers improved independent access for users with mobility needs The courtroom entrance has been automated, allowing users of wheelchairs and other mobility aids to enter independently.
Adaptations have been made to the main legal professionals' bench to accommodate wheelchair users and support independent working.
Access routes through the building have also been improved.
All double doors along the main route between the West and East Wings have been upgraded to remain open during the day, making movement through the complex easier for people with mobility needs.
Independent access to the Supreme Court has been improved and the platform lift has been removed.
A temporary ramp is now in place while a permanent access solution is being designed and installed.
Works continue on upgrading toilet facilities to improve accessibility and usability for all users.
The ground-floor male and accessible toilets will remain closed until 9 November.
Noisy works will continue during this period. To minimise disruption, most noise-generating activities will take place before 10am.
The second-floor toilets will also close for approximately one week during the project.
