Eight law school teams from across the country gathered at Blackhall Place for the national negotiation competition 2026 (28 February).
It was a day of high calibre strategy and negotiation, hosted by the Law Society.
The competition challenges teams of two students to negotiate either a transaction or the resolution of a dispute, with judges observing the negotiation and post consultation discussions
The standard of competition this year was exceptionally strong, reflecting the depth of talent across participating law schools.
Scenario
Following two preliminary rounds the final paired UCD (Mark McDwyer and Ruth Morris) and Maynooth (Izaak Reidy-Gilroy and Kellie O’Riordan) were in a scenario concerning the renegotiation of a commercial contact.
In a closely-contested final, last year’s beaten finalists UCD returned to claim victory, demonstrating resilience, strategic skill and impressive teamwork under pressure.
The winning team was presented with the cup by Ms Justice Nuala Jackson at a ceremony in Blackhall Place.
As national champions, the UCD team coached by Kevin Barrett (McCann FitzGerald) now qualifies to represent Ireland at the International Negotiation Competition in Canada this summer.
“This will be an exciting opportunity to compete on the global stage and showcase the strength of Irish legal education,” said John Lunney of the Law Society Law School.
