Two leadership appointments at Central Bank

The Central Bank has announced two appointments to its leadership team.

Gavin Curran has been appointed director of capital markets and funds, while Max Patanella is the regulator’s new chief information officer (CIO).

Curran joined the Central Bank in September 2022 and has been head of funds supervision since January 2025.

He has over 20 years’ experience in capital markets and funds, having held senior roles in both industry and regulatory environments.

‘Global hub’

Patanella joins the Central Bank from Virgin Media O2, where he was the CIO for consumer and wholesale.

He brings more than 30 years’ experience in leading complex IT and digital change in large-scale, highly regulated environments.

“Ireland is a global hub for capital markets and funds, and effective supervision of the sector is a key element of our mandate as a regulator,” said Governor Gabriel Makhlouf.

He said that Cooney would lead his team in delivering the bank’s four safeguarding outcomes in the sector:

  • Protection of consumer and investor interests,
  • Safety and soundness of firms,
  • Integrity of the system, and
  • Financial stability.

Makhlouf said that Patanella would oversee the security and resilience of the bank’s IT systems, which he described as “critical to our work”.
