Course turns legal expertise into impact

The Law Society is now welcoming applications for its Professional Doctorate in Law programme, which is offered in partnership with Northumbria University.

The course gives offers experienced lawyers in Ireland the opportunity to build advanced legal knowledge, sharpen research skills, and strengthen professional practice.

Delivered over 3.5 years, the programme will enable participants to undertake original research, influence practice, and contribute to the future of the profession.

Since its launch in 2019, students have explored a wide range of innovative and thought-provoking research topics that address issues of real significance to the legal profession in Ireland.

Resources and supports

After a celebration ceremony held at Blackhall Place in April for recent doctoral graduates, Dr Barry Magee (Chief Legal Costs Adjudicator at the Office of the Legal Costs Adjudicators) said that he would “thoroughly recommend” the programme.

“For me, the most important aspect was the ability to combine work with the requirements of the programme. Everything was done online and designed to fit around a normal working day,” he stated.

“I was very impressed by the resources and supports made available to students. Tutors were always available and guided me through the various stages of the research via monthly online meetings,” he added.

Critical thinking

Previous thesis topics have included:

  • Addressing the expert and their evidence: What challenges could be utilised to ensure a rigorous and effective assessment of the admissibility and presentation of expert evidence?
  • The development of corporate sustainability in the EU and its impact on multinational and large companies in Ireland, and
  • A study of the attitude and the knowledge of practising solicitors in Ireland towards mediation and the Mediation Act 2017.

Completing a doctorate provides advanced expertise in a specialised field, critical-thinking skills, and career opportunities in academia, research, or top-level leadership.
