Revenue’s 2025 audits netted €734 million

Figures from Revenue show that it completed over 291,600 audit and compliance interventions last year.

While the number of audits carried out was lower than in 2024, they yielded €734 million – up from €591 million in 2024.

Its preliminary results for 2025 also show that it settled 189 tax-avoidance cases, netting €41.7 million, and secured 204 criminal convictions for tax evasion offences.

The vast majority of prosecutions were in the District Court, with 15 convictions in the Circuit Court for serious tax and excise evasion and fraud.

Revenue also published 113 settlements in its list of tax defaulters.

Tax take of €106 billion

Overall, exchequer returns for 2025 show receipts of €106 billion in taxes and duties – slightly down on 2024’s €107 billion.

The fall was mainly due to the timing of receipts from the EU Court of Justice’s Apple tax ruling.

In addition, the tax body collected over €34 billion on behalf of other departments, agencies and EU member states.

Compliance rates strong

“Timely-compliance rates remained strong in 2025, with voluntary compliance delivering rates of 99% for large and medium cases and 92% across all other cases,” said Revenue chair Niall Cody, referring to business taxes.

“This performance reflects the continued commitment of businesses, individual taxpayers, and tax practitioners to meet their obligations,” he added.

The tax authority said that it continued to target the illegal supply of tobacco and drugs last year, with its teams seizing over 46.9 million cigarettes and 39,100 kilos of drugs, with an estimated value of more than €191 million.

“2025 recorded the second-highest cocaine seizures of the past decade, surpassed only by 2023 when €157 million of cocaine was seized on board MV Matthew,” said Ruth Kennedy (director general of customs).
