Human Rights and Equality Committee essay contest

The Law Society’s Human Rights and Equality Committee, in partnership with A&L Goodbody (ALG), has launched its 2026 annual student essay competition.

This year’s contest offers a one-month paid internship at ALG’s Dublin office and a cash prize.

The competition, which launched on January 28, is designed to engage students with pressing social issues.

Title

This year's essay title focuses on domestic legal challenges:

“Despite years of progress on the protection of the rule of law in Ireland, Ireland’s progress on a number of rule of law issues has stagnated. Discuss how the rule of law in Ireland can be strengthened to ensure adequate protections for vulnerable groups.”

Entrants are encouraged to explore critical barriers to civil justice, including the need for reform in the civil legal-aid scheme.

The use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) by entrants is prohibited.

All submissions will be expected to demonstrate original legal research and critical analysis.

The competition is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students currently enrolled in third-level institutions across Ireland, regardless of their field of study.

1,500 words

Prospective entrants must submit their essays to a maximum of 1,500 words, including footnotes and bibliography, by 5pmon Friday February 27.

Submissions should be sent via email to hrecessaycompetition@lawsociety.ie.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to Dublin for in-person interviews, where they will present their arguments to a judging panel.

Final results are expected to be announced in April, with the winning internship scheduled for summer 2026.
