Planning permissions for homes slump in Q2

Official figures show a sharp drop in the number of planning permissions granted for homes in the second quarter (Q2) of this year.

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) said that 7,447 housing units were approved in the three-month period – down 12.5% from the 8,513 recorded in the same period last year.

This represents a much bigger drop than the 2.5% recorded in the first quarter of this year.

Apartment approvals down 21%

Houses accounted for 63% of all homes granted planning permission in Q2, while apartments made up the remaining 37%.

According to the figures, the number of houses granted planning permission fell by 6.4% when compared with Q2 last year, while apartment approvals dropped by 21.4%.

There were particularly big falls across the four local authorities of Dublin, where there was an annual drop of 35.5% in the total number of homes approved in Q2.

Multi-development houses drop

The 583 houses approved in Dublin represented a drop of 45% from a year earlier, while there was a 30% fall in apartments to 1,233 approvals.

The number of multi-development houses receiving planning permission across the country declined by 7.5% annually – from 3,852 units in Q2 last year to 3,565 in the second quarter of this year.

The number of one-off houses receiving planning permission in Q2 was down 3.2% compared with a year earlier.
