Irish regulator Emer Cooke is to stay on as executive director of the European Medicine Agency (EMA) until 30 April 2027.
The agency’s management board unanimously backed the renewal of her mandate at a meeting this week.
Appointed in 2020 as the first woman to head the regulatory body, her current term was due to expire in November this year.
Before taking up her current role, Cooke worked at the World Health Organization (WHO), where she was the director responsible for all regulatory activities for medical products between 2016 and 2020.
She had previously worked at the EMA between 2002 and 2016, while she had earlier held a position in the European Commission’s pharmaceuticals unit.
Cooke also held several roles within the Irish pharmaceutical sector between 1985 and 1990.
