Britain’s Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) is seeking a 23% rise in its budget next year to help deal with a rapidly increasing burden of investigation work.
The regulator has said it is opening an average of 40% more investigations a month compared with a year ago, as reports of misconduct come flooding in.
The scale and complexity of the caseload was now unmanageable without significant further investment, despite efficiency improvements, the regulator said.
The SRA wants its budget hiked by £16.3 million to £86.5 million.
It also wants its component of the individual practising certificate fee upped from £164 to £190, the England and Wales Gazette reports.
