Bar of Ireland to hold human-rights conference

The Bar of Ireland is hosting a special half-day conference titled 'At The Margins: Three Priority Areas Through a Human Rights Lens', taking place in-person on Saturday 10 May at the Distillery Building, Dublin 7.

The half-day event will address human-rights issues in housing, prison law, and gender-based violence.

Panel 1: Shelter as a Right? Housing, Homelessness and the Law

Chaired by Ms Justice Sara Phelan (pictured), the speakers are:

  • Hilary Hogan BL,
  • Tara O’Leary BL,
  • Kate Heffernan, solicitor, Mercy Law Resource Centre.

Panel 2: Detention and Dignity: Developments in Prison Law

Chaired by Ms Justice Tara Burns, speakers include:

  • Dr Mary Rogan,
  • Dr Ciaran Craven SC.

Panel 3: Violence Against Women: Contemporary Issues in Tackling Gender-Based Violence, chaired by Ms Justice Nuala Jackson.

The speakers are:

  • Prof Caroline Fennell, Cuan (DSGBV) Agency,
  • Jane McGowan BL,
  • Sarah Benson, Women’s Aid.
