EU seeking views on ‘high-risk’ AI systems

The European Commission has launched a public consultation on how legislation on ‘high-risk’ AI systems should be implemented.

The EU’s AI Act, parts of which came into effect earlier this year, classifies AI systems into different risk categories, with those seen to be a higher risk facing stricter regulation.

The consultation will feed into upcoming guidelines from the commission on classifying high-risk AI systems, and their associated requirements and obligations.

Practical examples

The AI Act identifies two types of ‘high-risk' AI systems:

  • Those that are important for product safety under the EU’s harmonised legislation, and
  • Those that can significantly affect people's health, safety, or fundamental rights in specific use cases listed in the AI Act.

The commission says that the consultation will collect practical examples and clarify issues linked to high-risk AI systems.

The consultation will be open until 18 July.
