TCD law student wins 2025 Cara Scholarship

Second-year Trinity College Dublin (TCD) law student Omotolani Sogbetun has won the 2025 Matheson Cara Scholarship.

The initiative, in partnership with TCD, is named in honour of late Matheson partner Cara O'Hagan.

The scholarship is dedicated to creating opportunities, fostering talent, and supporting university students to succeed in their early careers.

It is open to second-year undergraduate students in TCD – including students on the Higher Education Access Route or the Disability Access Route to Education schemes, mature students, and students who face barriers in third-level education.

As winner of this year’s scholarship, Sogbetun has taken up a place on Matheson’s recent Summer Internship Programme.

Dedicated mentor

She will also receive a bursary of €5,000 for each academic year and will have a dedicated mentor from Matheson to provide support during her university journey.

Matheson managing partner Michael Jackson said that the scheme reflected the firm’s continuing commitment to supporting the next generation of legal talent and fostering a more inclusive legal community.

Omotolani Sogbetun said: “As a first-generation Nigerian immigrant who has overcome significant challenges, this recognition reminds me that my background is not a barrier but a strength.”

She added that the programme had given her the confidence to see a future for herself in the legal profession.
