Prison Visiting Committee members sought

The Minister for Justice is seeking expressions of interest from people interested in being considered for appointment to a Prison Visiting Committee (PVC).

The main function of PVCs is to visit, at frequent intervals, the prison or open centre to which they are appointed and to hear any concerns from prisoners

Experience and/or expertise in the criminal-justice system and the prison environment are listed as ‘desirable’ for candidates.

Elements listed as ‘essential’ for applicants include evidence of:

  • Board or committee experience,
  • A clear understanding of the functions of PVCs,
  • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals and the ability to build effective working relationships, and
  • An understanding of the public sector.

Three-year terms

The closing date for applications is Friday 19 September (3pm).

The Department of Justice says that, as vacancies arise, successful candidates may be appointed to one of 12 PVCs that are associated with the 12 prisons and open centres managed by the Irish Prison Service (IPS).

Members are appointed by the minister for terms of three years and may be eligible for reappointment for a further term .
