Law Society updates on conveyancing progress

Law Society Director of Policy Dr Brian Hunt has updated solicitors on recent work to reform and improve the conveyancing process.

Conveyancing is an area of huge importance to Law Society members, with almost 70% of solicitors involved in the process.

The Law Society has identified six key actions to improve efficiencies in the conveyancing process. These include addressing delays with:

  • Taking up title deeds,
  • Planning matters,
  • Taking up roads and services certificates,
  • Statutory declarations,
  • Land Registry, and
  • Property taxes.

Target of eight weeks

His article follows a progress report recently published by a group set up to implement measures aimed at speeding up the conveyancing and probate processes.

A report from an expert group on conveyancing and probate had called last year for a target turnaround time of eight weeks for completing both processes.

“We now have a real opportunity to deliver reforms that will make property transactions faster, fairer, and more affordable for consumers and alleviate pressures on practitioners,” Dr Hunt writes, adding that the Law Society will continue to push for reform of the issues affecting solicitors – including Residential Zoned Land Tax, Local Property Tax, and the Temporary Development Waiver Contribution Scheme.
