Alumni honour for Judge Geoffrey Shannon

Judge Geoffrey Shannon is to receive one of eight alumni awards to be presented by the University of Galway next month.

Previously the Government’s special rapporteur on child protection from 2006 to 2019, he was appointed as a Circuit Court judge in 2023.

Judge Shannon was educated at what was then NUI Galway and University College Dublin and qualified as a solicitor in 1996, becoming a senior counsel in 2020. He was previously director of policy at the Law Society.

Inquiries and reviews

A leading authority on child law and family law in Ireland, he has carried out several major inquiries and reviews in the family and child-law area on behalf of Government and international bodies and has written or co-authored 30 books.

He will be presented with the alumni award for law, public policy and society, sponsored by law firm RDJ, at a gala awards night on 23 May.

The awards celebrate outstanding individuals among the University of Galway’s 133,000 alumni.
