New sheriffs for Sligo and Donegal appointed

The Government has appointed Dr John O'Malley as the Revenue Sheriff and Receiver of Fines for County Sligo.

The appointment, effective from 5 May, is in addition to his existing position of Revenue Sheriff and Receiver of Fines for County Mayo.

The current sheriff for Sligo, David Kelly, will become the Revenue Sheriff and Receiver of Fines for County Donegal on the same date.

He already holds the position for counties Roscommon, Leitrim, Cavan, Longford, and Monaghan.

Debt recovery

Revenue Sheriffs undertake debt recovery on behalf of Revenue.

While sheriffs are appointed by Government after public competitions, they are not public servants and are paid mainly on a commission or fee basis.

A report published by the Department of Justice last year recommended retaining the office of sheriff, describing it as “an effective debt-collection mechanism”.
