This year’s fifth annual IMRO and Law Society annual copyright lecture will focus on music IP, data-mining exceptions and the EU's AI Act.
The lecture will be delivered by Dr Mark Hyland, Law Society IMRO adjunct Professor of Intellectual Property.
It will take place on Wednesday 1 May from 5.30pm to 7pm at the Law Society in Blackhall Place, Dublin 7.
There is no charge for attendance, which will yield 1.5 general CPD hours.
The 2024 lecture’s title is ‘Music Copyright: The Text and Data-mining Exceptions and the EU's AI Act’.
In addition to Dr Hyland’s contribution, the topic will be addressed by Prof Eleonora Rosati (Full professor of Intellectual Property Law at Stockholm University and ‘of counsel’ at Bird & Bird).
Prof Rosati is editor of the Journal of Intellectual Property Law and Practice (Oxford University Press) and co-founder of Fashion Law London.
Dr Mark Hyland, a qualified solicitor, has been lecturing at the College of Business, Technological University Dublin (TUD) since March 2020.
In June 2019, he was appointed the inaugural IMRO adjunct Professor of IP Law at the Law Society.
Dr Hyland’s current research focuses on digital copyright and how geo-blocking/geo-location technology can be used to facilitate the territorial licensing of digital copyright works.
His research will also examine possible tensions (in the specific context of digital copyright content) between two important EU laws: the geo-blocking regulation and the portability regulation.
He also contributes to the Eurlegal section of the Law Society Gazette.
