The total number of homes approved in the third quarter (Q3) of this year fell by almost 11% compared with the same period last year, according to official figures.
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) said that 8,611 homes were granted planning permission during the quarter, compared with 9,662 in the same period last year.
The drop was mainly due to a 31% slump in approvals for apartments, as housing permissions rose by 9%.
Houses accounted for just over 60% of all homes granted planning permission during the period.
The number of multi-development houses receiving planning permission grew by 13% annually, from 3,632 in Q3 last year to 4,101 in Q3 this year. The number of one-off houses granted permission was down 3%.
The figures show a general fall in approvals across the Dublin area, with houses down 4% and apartments down 58% across the city’s four local authorities.
The CSO has now recorded annual falls in planning permissions for all three quarters of 2024 so far.
