Median weekly earnings up by one-fifth in five years

Data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show that median weekly earnings were €670.90 in 2022 – an increase of 4.1% from €644.55 in 2021.

In 2022, median weekly earnings for men were €741.86, compared with €592.92 for women.

Median weekly earnings rose by 20.5% over the five years from 2017 to 2022.

The economic sectors with the highest median weekly earnings were:

  • Information and communication (€1,272.45), and
  • Financial, insurance and real estate (€942.45).

Food sector lowest pay

The sector with the lowest median weekly earnings was accommodation and food services (€348.84).

Median weekly earnings for Dublin were €757.03 in 2022, which was 12.8% higher than the median weekly earnings for the State at €670.90.

The figure in the capital was 40.2% higher than Donegal which, at €540.00, had the lowest median weekly earnings.

Of employments that were active in October 2021, 73.6% were also active in October 2022.

For those employments that were active in both periods, median weekly earnings rose by 7.7%.

Of employments that were active in October 2022, 8.8% were supported by the Wage Subsidy Schemes (WSS) at some point during that year, compared with 20% in 2021.

WSS payments accounted for 0.6% of total earnings across all employments in 2022.
