Government surplus of 1.7% of GDP in 2022

Provisional CSO data for 2022 shows a general government surplus of €8.5 billion which was 1.7% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

In 2022, revenue increased by €16.8 billion (16.9%) while expenditure rose by €1.7 billion (1.6%) resulting in an improvement of €15.1 billion on the 2021 deficit. 

Debt ratio

The general government debt ratio decreased to 44.4% of GDP at year end 2022.

Gross debt also fell by €11.4 billion during 2022 with an end-year position of €224.8 billion, compared with the 2021 figure of €236.1 billion (54.4% of GDP).
