Ireland for Law mission to Big Apple this week

An Ireland for Law delegation has travelled to New York this week to promote Ireland as a centre for international legal services.

Law Society President Michelle Ní Longáin will speak in the city at a breakfast briefing tomorrow morning (15 September) on the topic of Ireland as a destination for structured-finance transactions and financial services.

The briefing will be hosted by Helena Nolan, Consul General of Ireland, on Park Avenue.

President Ní Longáin said: “This is a collaborative effort to promote Ireland as a strong, effective legal jurisdiction with an independent judiciary and courts service.

“Ireland has full-service contentious and non-contentious legal expertise in all sectors, and a common-law legal system incorporating the rule of law. The Irish legal system is skilled and experienced in working with US clients across all their legal needs,” she added.

Ireland for Law, chaired by former Taoiseach John Bruton, is spearheading an international legal-services strategy that complements Ireland for Finance, its international financial-services counterpart.

Mission

Justice minister Helen McEntee, Attorney General Paul Gallagher, and High Court President David Barniville are all part of the mission to New York, which will highlight Ireland’s legal expertise in corporate advice, transactions, and international dispute-resolution and restructuring.

Supported by the Law Society, Bar Council, and the IDA, the delegation will meet US commercial lawyers and executives, pushing Ireland’s position as an English-language common-law jurisdiction in the EU.

Also today (14 September), the topic of ‘Arbitration: Dublin or New York – Advantages and Disadvantages’ will be discussed at the firm of Norton Rose Fulbright, on the Avenue of the Americas.

Jointly, Ireland for Law and the New York State Bar Association  will run a seminar tomorrow (15 September) at Moses and Singer LLP, in the city’s Chrysler Building.

Forthcoming missions are planned in 2022 and 2023 to Madrid, Brussels, London and Chicago.
