January jobless rate at 7.8% including PUP claimants

The COVID-19-adjusted unemployment rate for January was 7.8%, including those on the Pandemic Unemployment Payment, (PUP) new CSO figures show.

Statistician John Mullane said that while the seasonally-adjusted standard was 5.3% in January, the COVID-19-adjusted measure could indicate a rate of 7.8% if all PUP claimants were classified as unemployed.

Alternative measure

This alternative measure is up from a rate of 7.4% in December 2021 and down from 27.1% in January 2021 

The seasonally-adjusted rate using standard methodology was 5.3%, up from a rate of 5.2% in December 2021 and down from 7.0% in January 2021.

The seasonally-adjusted rate breaks down as 5.1% for males and 5.4% for females and 13% for those aged 15 to 24, and 4% for those aged 25 to 74.
