CCPC to carry out full probe of supermarket deal

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) is to carry out a full investigation into Tesco Ireland’s plan to take over Galway supermarket business Joyce’s.

In a statement, the commission said that it had made the decision after an extended preliminary investigation.

The CCPC probe will determine whether the proposed deal could lead to a substantial lessening of competition in the State.

Preliminary investigation

The company Tesco plans to buy – Patrick C Joyce Supermarket (Headford) – has ten stores.

The CCPC will publish the outcome of its preliminary investigation no later than 60 working days after the date of the determination, after allowing the parties the opportunity to request that confidential information be removed from the published version.
