Former ComReg chair joins competition body

Former ComReg chair Kevin O’Brien has been appointed as a member of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC).

Before joining the competition watchdog, he was most recently head of consumer policy and research at the Central Bank, having previously been a commissioner at ComReg from 2011 to 2018.

He served as chair of the communications watchdog from 2013 to 2015.

Enhanced legislation

Before joining ComReg, O’Brien had worked in a range of policy roles in the civil service, dealing with energy, communications, and broadcasting policy matters.

CCPC chair Jeremy Godfrey said that O’Brien’s “strong and varied” public-service experience would be useful to the CCPC, as it used the opportunities created by enhanced legislation on competition and consumer rights.

The other current members of the commission, along with the chair, are Patrick Kenny, Brian McHugh, and Úna Butler.
