IHREC and Daft.ie reach deal on ads

The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC) has reached an agreement with Daft Media Limited on property advertisements that are potentially in breach of equality legislation.

IHREC says that it engaged with the company, which operates the Daft.ie property listings website, after a Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) decision in 2019 that ruled in favour of the human-rights body.

In a statement, the commission said that Daft had agreed to withdraw its appeal against the WRC, and “to expand and develop practical methods to identify, investigate, review and take down discriminatory advertising on the Daft.ie website”.

Daft.ie to review system

IHREC said that the media company had also committed itself to reviewing and, where necessary, improving the system on a continuous basis.

“The commission welcomes Daft’s engagement in this matter and the resolution of this long-standing litigation,” said Sinéad Gibney (IHREC Chief Commissioner, pictured).

The body took the proceedings in 2016 after identifying a number of adverts that it believed breached sections of the Equal Status Acts 2000-2015.
