Extradition arrests soar as Schengen SIS II kicks in

Suspects arrests have more than tripled since Ireland joined the EU-wide Schengen Information System (SIS II) four months ago.

Dozens of alleged offenders have now been pinpointed as living here, on foot of Ireland’s sign-up to the real-time law enforcement information-sharing database.

List to double

High Court President Ms Justice Mary Irvine has said that the High Court’s extradition list is “set to double” due to Ireland’s membership of SIS II.

The Irish Times reports that 86 arrests have been made for the purpose of extradition since 1 March.

The figure for the same period last year was 27.
